| Woolworths in Levin, around 1949 |
|
National Library NZ on The Commons Woolworths Ltd., Woolworths, open in Levin. Bargains in all departments, ca 1949, Photolithograph 540 x 432 mm, Printed Ephemera Collection, Alexander Turnbull Library, Reference: Eph-D-RETAIL-1949-01
As the country slowly recovered from war shortages, variety stores such as Woolworth’s and McKenzie’s used this matter-of-fact format in the 1940-1950s, with individual squares clearly advertising each product with its price beside it.
From a teatowel to a tumbler, from slippers to knitting wool, no product was too humble to appear proudly in print, as a more comfortable everyday life resumed.

| Combien Mademoiselle? |
|
National Library of Scotland British Sergeant and a Guardsman shopping in Bailleul. Tommy finds the French children quite a match for him at bargaining, but they remain the best of friends. This scene is typical of the happy relations existing between the Tommy and the French inhabitants. Two soldiers pause to chat to a group of French children. The children are surrounded by baskets and piles of what look like cauliflowers and straw. A young girl is holding up one of the cauliflowers. They are standing on a busy cobbled street filled with people and market stalls. It is a happy scene.
This scene is typical of the happy relations existing between the Tommy and the French Inhabitants.' The nickname 'Tommy' entered into general usage after the Rudyard Kipling poems, 'Tommy' and 'To Thomas Atkins' (1892), which pay homage to the sturdy character of the average British soldier. Scenes such as this were commonly used as propaganda, intended to boost morale amongst the troops and provide reassurance to those at home.
[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN ON THE BRITISH FRONT IN FRANCE. "Combien Mademoiselle?" British Sergeant and a Guardsman shopping in Bailleul. Tommy finds the French children quite a match for him at bargaining, but they remain the best of friends.']
